Measure

You can use the Measure Area tool to measure an area you enter, the area of hatching, a pattern or fill, or the area of a 3D surface.

To measure an area

1. Click Measure Area.

   Or

   Click Measure (How) and then Area.

   

   Activate Measure in one of the following ways

   • Menu bar: Tools

   • Keyboard: Ctrl+Alt+M

   • Toolbar: Standard
2. Define the area you want to measure in one of the following ways:
   • To measure a 2D area, click the corners of the area polygon.
     You can use Area detection, Island detection and Inverse island detection in the dialog line (see Input options for entering polylines).
     When you click an element, the input options provide the tools for polygonizing existing elements.
   • To measure the area of a 3D surface, either click three corners of the area in succession or click two adjacent edges of the area.
   • To measure the area of hatching, patterns or fills, click in the area.

     The measured area is displayed in transparent selection color.

     The following values are displayed:

   • Area = area of the polygon
   • Total = sum total of the areas measured (if you measured more than one)
   • Perim = perimeter of the polygon
   • Total = sum total of the perimeters measured (if you measured more than one)
   • Angle to plan = angle of the 3D surface relative to the base plane (with 3D surfaces only)
   • X center of gravity = X coordinate of the center of gravity
   • Y center of gravity = Y coordinate of the center of gravity
   • Z center of gravity = Z coordinate of the center of gravity (3D surfaces only)
   • Number = consecutive number of the area you measured last
3. Do the following:
   • Click Set precision to specify the decimal places for the values returned. The values are rounded off accordingly.
   • Click to place the measurement result as text (only possible if you have not selected the measurement tool while another tool is active).
   • Click one of the values to use it for a tool or for the calculator.
   • Click and then, in the dialog box, click a value to copy it to the Clipboard.
   • Click OK to measure another element.
   • Click Cancel to quit the measurement tool.
