You can choose to display roof planes and default planes in viewports with the Animation, Hidden and Sketch view types.

Using the Options - Planes page - Default reference planes and Roof planes, custom planes areas, you can assign animation surfaces (for example, a transparent glass surface) to default planes, roof planes and custom planes.

Note: The settings you make for Default planes and Roof planes, custom planes in the Options on the Planes page have no effect on plane display. If you have chosen not to display planes on this page, planes will appear as objects in viewports with the Animation, Hidden and Sketch view type.
