Linking smart symbol instances in a hierarchical group

Instances of smart symbols can be linked in a hierarchical group. These can be instances of different smart symbols. The sequence in which you link them sets up a hierarchy within the chain. These means that any modifications you make to parent instances will also affect its child instances. Parent instances are instances to which other instances or instance structures have been appended. Child instances are instances that are attached to other instances.

To combine smart symbol instances in a hierarchical group

1. Click Link Smart Symbols (How).
   

   Activate Link Smart Symbols in one of the following ways

   • Menu bar: Modify Bonus Tools Smart Symbols

   • Palette: Tools Modify area in the following module(s):

   Smart Symbols

2. In the Input Options, click Hierarchy.
3. Click the parent instance.
4. Select the instances to be attached to it (i.e., select the child instances).
   

   • To select a single element, click it.
   • To select elements in a region, use the left mouse button to open a selection rectangle around the elements you want to select
   • To include all the elements in the current document, click All in the Input options or press CTRL+A. Please note that this option is not available for all tools.
