More Reasons for Problems when Importing Files with Large Coordinates

Importing files with large coordinates

Possible solutions

  1. Unit and scale
Contact the persons with whom you are exchanging data to find out which unit and scale they are using in their files. Both settings can be made in Options..., Unit and Scale. If these values are not available, try the following:

determine the difference between the smallest and the largest value from the maximum and minimum coordinates (e.g.324,134.789[m] – 321,000.000[m] results in 1134.789[m]). In the case of project extents of roughly three kilometers (e.g. a large site plan), meter would be a useful unit for the import.

  2. "Coordinates ”out of the range"
It may be possible that there are some elements whose coordinates are ”out of the range". These elements may be reference points in blocks, hatching, etc.
  3. "Scattered" elements
The file may also contain elements which are too far away from the global point. It may be helpful to reduce the elements to be imported so that you can detect problematic element types (for example, if you exclude elements such as smart symbols, fills or hatching from the import using filters in Options....).
  4. Coordinate range is too large
It can happen that the coordinate range as a whole is too large, e.g. from -7,500,000 m to +7,500,000 m. These problems can be caused by resize operations.
If that's the case or if you are sure that you do not need to export the results again, it may be useful to actually displace the element coordinates in such a way that at least a part of the file can be transferred. Import the same file using different offset values to different drawing files so that at least the graphics are transferred, which means that the elements are no longer at their original positions. However, if steps 1 to 4 do not solve the problems, the files usually contain corrupt data. In this case, ask the person with whom you are exchanging data to send the file including all data (unit, scale) again.

Note: It is essential that you read the log file after the import. If problems occur, send this file by email to the Hotline or fax if to to 0049-89-92793 8829.
