Modifying geometric elements in smart symbols

You can use the Modify Smart Symbol tool to modify an existing smart symbol by adding, modifying or removing elements. All the actions you carry out are interpreted as a modification of the smart symbol. The modification applies to all the instances of the smart symbol in the current drawing file (unlike the Attach Geometric Elements to Instance of Smart Symbol tool, which modifies an individual instance of a smart symbol only).

Note: Using Update Smart Symbols Placed from Library, you can also modify smart symbols in other drawing files.

Note: This way, you can also modify the format properties of smart symbols defined using Smart Symbol.

To modify geometric elements in a smart symbol

1. Click Modify Smart Symbol (How).
   

   Activate Modify Display Parameters in one of the following ways

   • Menu bar: Modify Bonus Tools Smart Symbols

   • Palette: Tools Modify area in the following module(s):

   Smart Symbols

2. Click an instance of the smart symbol whose geometric elements you want to change.

   The Modify Smart Symbol dialog box appears.

3. In the Foils area, click the foil you want to modify with the right mouse button and, on the shortcut menu, click Modify geometry in smart symbol foil (n) and then choose Modify geometry in smart symbol foil (n) or Modify geometry in smart symbol foil (n) with foils in background.

   The Modify Smart Symbol dialog box is grayed out and unavailable and the selected foil is displayed in the workspace.

   Note: You can use the Modify geometry in smart symbol foil (n) with foils in background option to additionally display the foils of the current reference scale or drawing type in a brightened color in the background. Although the system snaps to elements in the background, any changes you make only apply to the elements of the active foil.

4. Modify the smart symbol foil. You can use any tool or module you consider to be suited to this task.
5. Press ESC to finish modifying the foil.

   The Modify Smart Symbol dialog box opens again so that you can make entries.

6. Repeat steps 3 to 5 to modify geometric elements of more foils.
7. If you want to save the modified smart symbol, enable the Save in option and enter a name for the smart symbol and specify the folder where it is to be saved.
   If you do not change the name, Allplan will overwrite the original smart symbol.
8. Click OK to apply the settings.

   Note: The smart symbol saved in the Smart symbols library replaces all the instances of the smart symbol in the current document.
