Adding computers as file servers to the workgroup

In addition to the file server, you can add more computers to the workgroup environment. You can then create projects and users on these computers or move projects and users to these computers.

Note: For running you do not need to add computers to the ALLPLAN network or workgroup manager! You can use all the tools, regardless of whether you have added computers or not. We recommend that you add computers to the network only if the network in your office is very slow. In this case, you can place the projects on several computers, reducing the time it takes the projects to load. However, today's networks are getting faster and faster.

Read the following notes before you add computers:

• You can back up data easily if everything is in the central file storage on the server. Backing up data is more difficult if the data is spread over several computers. To back up everything, you must use additional programs (for example, ArcServe). As an alternative, you can move the data (projects and users) back to the server and back the data up there at regular intervals.
• By moving a project or user to a computer, you reduce the time it takes the project or user to load. Do this if your network is very slow.

Adding a computer to the workgroup manager involves two steps:
